Photographs can add so much more information than mere words, which leads to greater understanding. The Civil War can seem abstract because it took place so long ago, but photographs taken at the time can bring us back to reality:

Photographs can also go where we cannot:

This is an actual photograph of Neptune, taken by the Voyager II space probe in 1989; the probe was launched in 1977--it took twelve years for it to get to Neptune.

Photographs help us to remember significant events:

Photographs can also help nonverbal people to communicate; this pdf describes a program in Sweden where photographs were consistently used as a language, enabling middle aged men to improve their verbal language as well as their behavior (fewer melt-downs).
